How to convert hourly pay to a salary
Multiply your hourly rate by the hours you work each week, then by the number of weeks you are paid each year. Every other figure is a share of that annual amount.
- Hours per week: your usual paid hours. Use 40 for a standard full-time week.
- Weeks per year: 52 for a full year. Paid vacation and holidays still count as paid weeks.
- Unpaid weeks off: weeks you expect to take without pay, such as unpaid leave or seasonal gaps.
- Days per week: only used to work out daily pay.
Hourly to salary formula
Worked example: $25 an hour
$25.00 an hour, 40 hours a week, 52 paid weeks
- Paid hours a year: 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours.
- Annual salary: $25.00 × 2,080 = $52,000.00.
- Monthly: $52,000.00 ÷ 12 = $4,333.33. Biweekly: ÷ 26 = $2,000.00.
- With 2 unpaid weeks off, paid weeks fall to 50 and the annual total becomes $50,000.00.

Assumptions and limits
- Gross pay only. No taxes, benefits, retirement contributions, or other deductions are included.
- No overtime. The conversion uses straight-time pay. If you regularly work overtime, estimate it with the overtime calculator and add it separately.
- 52 weeks. A calendar year is 52 weeks plus one day, or two in a leap year. That is why some years contain 27 biweekly paydays. The federal government uses an average of 2,087 work hours a year when it converts salaries to hourly rates.
- Even periods. Monthly and paycheck amounts are even shares of the annual total. Real paychecks vary with the hours you work in each period.

Frequently asked questions
How much is $20 an hour per year?
At 40 hours a week for 52 paid weeks, $20 an hour is $41,600.00 a year before taxes. That is $3,466.67 a month or $1,600.00 every two weeks.
What is a quick way to convert hourly pay to salary?
Double the hourly rate and multiply by 1,000. That assumes about 2,000 paid hours a year. The exact full-time figure is 2,080 hours (40 × 52), so the shortcut comes out about 4% low.
Does the result include taxes?
No. Every figure is gross pay, before federal, state, and local income tax, Social Security and Medicare, retirement contributions, and other deductions. Take-home pay will be lower.
How should I handle vacation and holidays?
If your time off is paid, keep weeks per year at 52 and unpaid weeks at 0, because you are paid for those weeks. If you take unpaid time off, enter the number of unpaid weeks so they are removed from the annual total.
Why does the weekly figure differ from what I earn in a working week?
The weekly figure is the annual amount divided by 52. When you have unpaid weeks, that average is lower than the pay for one complete working week, which the calculator shows separately below the table.
What is the difference between biweekly and semimonthly pay?
Biweekly pay comes every two weeks, which is 26 paychecks in most years. Semimonthly pay comes twice a month, which is 24 paychecks a year. The annual total is the same, so each semimonthly paycheck is a little larger.
Can I use this for part-time work?
Yes. Enter your usual weekly hours. For example, $18 an hour at 25 hours a week for 52 weeks is $23,400.00 a year.
