How the biweekly pay calculator works
Choose hourly or salary. For hourly pay, enter your rate and the hours worked in each week of the pay period, then the weekly overtime limit and multiplier. The calculator prices each week on its own and adds them. When your weeks are uneven, it shows how much overtime averaging would have hidden.
Biweekly pay formula
Worked example: an uneven pay period
$20.00 an hour, 50 hours in week 1 and 30 hours in week 2
- Week 1: 40 × $20.00 + 10 × $30.00 = $1,100.00.
- Week 2: 30 × $20.00 = $600.00.
- Biweekly gross pay: $1,700.00.
- Two even 40-hour weeks pay $1,600.00, so the uneven schedule earns $100.00 more for the same 80 hours.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate biweekly pay?
For hourly pay, work out each week separately: regular hours up to your weekly limit at your rate, plus overtime hours at your rate times the multiplier. Add the two weeks. For a salary, divide the annual salary by 26.
Why is overtime not based on 80 hours?
Under the FLSA, overtime is based on each 168-hour workweek, and the Department of Labor says hours cannot be averaged over two or more weeks. Working 50 hours then 30 hours earns 10 hours of overtime, even though the total is 80.
How much is $20 an hour biweekly?
At 40 hours a week, 80 hours every two weeks × $20 = $1,600 before taxes.
How many biweekly paychecks are in a year?
Usually 26. Because a year is 52 weeks plus a day or two, some years contain 27 biweekly paydays. Salaried employers handle this in different ways.
Is biweekly the same as semimonthly?
No. Biweekly is every two weeks, 26 times a year. Semimonthly is twice a month, 24 times a year, so each semimonthly paycheck is a little larger. See biweekly vs semimonthly pay.
